8th grade sketchbooks are due this Thursday, November 2nd. I will be out by the 8th grade tables before 1st period collecting them in the morning. Both A and B groups sketchbooks are due on this date.
Saint Francis Cabrini students create worry dolls for Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital patients.
In their “Creative Compassion” art class, Saint Frances
Cabrini Junior High students are using their artistic talents to create
projects that will help others in their local community.
This semester, their first project was to create worry dolls that
will be given to patients and their families at the Lucille Packard
Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto. Each folk doll will have a note
attached with the Mayan legend explaining that the worry doll, when
placed under the pillow of someone who is unable to sleep, will carry
his or her burden of worry. In addition, students are also creating joke
books, game and activity binders, and ceramic guardian angel pins for
patients at the hospital.
Saint Francis Cabrini Art teacher, Mary Saca, has also equipped her
classroom with a “creative compassion corner,” so that early finishers
can work on projects that help those in the community like cards for
police officers and firemen, placemats for Meals on Wheels, and joke
books for people in hospitals.
All of the projects are made with a lot of love and students are
learning that their art can be used to do good for those around them.
3rd graders just completed their ceramic owls. I am attaching a paper clip to the back of them so that they can be hung as an ornament (a very heavy one) or hung on the wall with a push pin.
Instead of glaze, students colored the owls with oil pastel and the painted them with a watered down black acrylic paint/India ink mixture. They were then washed off and the black paint soaked into all of the nooks and crannies of their project giving them a weathered look.
Students had so much fun making these!!! What child doesn't like playing with clay?

Sketchbooks that don't pass will be returned to be revised and or redone by a specified due date or else the no-pass grade stands. A no-pass on the sketchbook requirement is a no-pass in Art. Sketchbooks are a requirement for passing Art.
We will need about 80 regular sized aluminum soda/water cans (please no beer cans). I will be collecting them over the next two weeks. You can have your child bring them to the art room. Thanks in advance!
We are FINALLY starting to finish up the 6th grade projects. Their works were inspired by Picasso's artworks that were based on musical instruments. Students learned about cubism and a variety of different ways to deconstruct their choice of instrument. Here are a few that are completed:
Here is a sneak peak of some of the completed 8th grade projects. Here was the criteria for each square:
Square #1: Realistic:
-Full-image animal drawing
-Side-view
-Realistic with shading details
-Animal must have interesting features (if the animal was in silhouette, you should be able to tell what animal it is)
Square #2: Simplistic:
-Animal must be drawn in simplified shapes and lines
-The viewer should still be able to tell what animal it is without much thought
Two questions to ask tablemates:
-Can you tell what animal this is?
-Can I take anything away from my drawing and you would still know what animal it is?
Square #3: Deconstructed Color Blocks:
-Animal is further deconstructed
-The viewer should not be able to tell what it is, until you tell them (then they should be able to piece it together).
-The addition of color: find significant colors that define certain animal characteristics
Square #4: Non-objective Depiction of Animal:
-Even with explanation, the animal is not discernible. It should have qualities of the past square and color themes and shape themes but even with explanation, the viewer will not see the animal.
Here are some more pictures of the 7th graders linoleum designs and watercolor illustrations. Next art class, we will begin carving out the linoleum and pulling our prints for the central image.
3rd graders finished their Dia De Los Muertos Cat Skeletons last week and they are now hanging in the hallway. Their bright colors and designs really brighten up the hallway.
This week 3rd grade just finished creating their clay owls. Next week they will be fired in the kiln and then we will add color to these adorable creatures with oil pastel and a paint wash.
